The Institution of Engineers Mauritius was invited by the Steering Committee on Maurice Ile Durable to attend a two days workshop held at the initiative of the Office of the Prime Minister and the Agence Francaise de Developpement (AFD).
The objective of the MID programme is to consolidate and further move Mauritius along a sustainable trajectory and into a green future with primary focus on reduction of our dependence on fossil fuels, increase in energy efficiency and mitigation of climate change.
In the context of the MID programme, the Maurice Ile Durable Fund was set up in June 2008 with a starting budget of Rs 1.3 billion to finance sustainable development projects. In order to give a greater impetus to the MID quest, a Steering Committee comprising representatives of various Ministries and Departments, the Academia and Donor Agencies has been set up within the Office of the Prime Minister on 4 September 2009.
The Agence Francaise de Developpement for its part has initiated a programme to support the MID initiative. The objectives of this programme are to assist the government in its effort to develop a coherent and shared vision of MID and adapt sectoral policies accordingly, to contribute to the emergence of projects presenting appositive impact on the environment, the economy and the well-being of the population and to foster appreciation by all stakeholders, through communication and dialogue with civil society and socioeconomic actors.
