Fundamental Tenets
1. Engineers shall hold paramount the safety, health and welfare
of the public, and the protection of the environment, and
shall strive to comply with the principles of sustainable
development in the performance of their professional duties,
and promote safety and health within the work place.
2. Engineers shall be knowledgeable about the legislation,
codes of practice and standards relevant to their profession
and perform services only in the areas of their competence;
they shall do so in a careful and diligent manner and, when
need arises, assign responsibilities only to those competent
to discharge the same.
3. Engineers shall express opinions, make statements and/or
give evidence in an objective and truthful manner, on the
basis of adequate knowledge and shall disclose the qualifications
for making such statements, the capacity in which they are
making the same and if, to their knowledge, their statements
favour any party or cause.
4. Engineers shall maintain confidentiality and avoid conflicts
of interest in the discharge of their professional obligations
towards each employer or client for whom they will act as
faithful agents or trustees.
5. Engineers shall build their professional reputation on
the merit of their services and shall not compete unfairly
with others.
6. Engineers shall act in such a manner as to uphold and
enhance the honour, integrity and dignity of their profession
and merit the trust of the community.
7. Engineers shall continue their professional development
throughout their career and shall actively assist in the professional
development of those engineers under their supervision.
8. Engineers shall conduct themselves with fairness and good
faith towards clients, colleagues and others, give credit
where it is due and accept, as well as give, honest and fair
professional criticism.
9. Engineers shall take all reasonable steps to fully acquaint
themselves and inform their clients, employers and if necessary
the community, of the social and environmental consequences
of the actions and projects in which they are involved, and
shall ensure that they have carried out the relevant risk
assessments.
10. Engineers shall report to the Institution of Engineers
Mauritius any illegal or unethical decisions or practices
by any Engineer in the course of his professional activities.
