Frequently Asked Questions
Who are eligible to apply for membership of IEM?
Ans. (i) All graduates in Engineering are eligible as Associate
Member provided their degrees are acceptable for registration
with CRPE.
After sufficient experience in their respective field, they
may apply for upgrade to Corporate Membership.
(ii) Diploma holders in Engineering can apply for Technician
Level.
(iii) Students in Engineering may apply as Student Member.
Where can we obtain the application form?
Ans. (i) Application forms for new Members or transfer are
available from the Secretary of IEM or any other Council Member.
(ii) Application forms for Student Members are available from
Dr A. Chan Chim Yuk or Dr D.K.Hurreeram at the University
of Mauritius.
(iii) All forms can be downloaded from this website.
(iv) All application forms duly filled in should be forwarded
to the Secretary of the IEM. Students may leave their application
forms with the above-named persons.
Who are eligible to become Council Members?
Ans. The IEM Constitution allows for only Corporate Members
and higher grades to serve on the Council. Eight Members are
elected for a two-year period. Four additional Members are
co-opted as follows:
(i) Two with wide experience in the Engineering field.
(ii) Two others to restore the balance of the various Engineering
fields.
Proposals were made at the last General Assembly to allow
also Associate Members to serve on the Council. This requires
an amendment to the IEM Constitution and the issue is being
considered by the present Council.
Why is there more Associate Members than Corporate Members?
Is it that difficult to obtain an upgrade?
Ans. Upgrade from Associate to Corporate Membership is not
automatic. The Associate Member must apply for upgrade if
he feels he has acquired sufficient experience in his field
of competence.
A large number of Associate Members are, in fact, eligible
for upgrade but they have not applied yet. These members are
invited to fill in the application form and forward it to
the Secretary.
Is there a mandatory requirement for Engineers to
sign the Declaration of the Code of Ethics?
Ans. Presently there is no such requirement. The Code of Ethics
is, at this stage, only a voluntary undertaking and we would
expect ALL Engineers to abide to same (whether or not they
are members of the IEM).
It is the intention of IEM to get all Engineers to sign the
Declaration in the future.
Will the "Professional House" be a joint
project with other associations like the MAA (Architects)
and MAQS (Quantity Surveyors)?
Ans. No. The land obtained in lease from the Government is
only in the name of IEM. The building shall be for Engineers
and called "Professional Engineer's House". It is
obvious that the cooperation of Architects and Quantity Surveyors
will be required to implement the project. A Sub Committee
is presently working on these modalities. All professionals
in the construction industry will be welcome to participate
in this major enterprise.
